Music Monday: Best Cover Versions - Real Love

Real Love
Original Artist: The Beatles
Cover Version by: Regina Spektor

What?! Another Beatles song? Well, the problem is, they have too many songs to admire at and there is a fabulous cover version for this number.
This song was written and and recorded by John Lennon on a cassette tape around 1977 - 1980, there are other songs in that tape including Free as a Bird. In 1994, and thanks God it happened, Yoko Ono gave the tape to the remaining off members The Beatles. In early 1995 Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr reworked on those songs, which finally released in Anthology 2.

Apart from the controversy for not being included in the chart of BBC Radio 1 (initially) which made McCartney really annoyed so he wrote an 800 words article in The Daily Mirror, this song is actually magnificent. Lennon's voice is so beautiful, maybe not technically but emotionally, maybe because he recorded the song himself when he was really "in" for that song. And the other remaining members of the Fab Four did a great work in making a great music arrangement to accommodate the song.

The Beatles

Regina Ilyinichna Spektor a Russian-born American singer, songwriter, and pianist. She had released six albums up till now. Her music refers to and is influenced by wide variation of music; folk, punk, rock, jazz, hip hop, and classical music. Her voice and piano skill is extraordinary and she knows it and really uses it.
In covering Real Love, Regina Spektor didn't do too many changes in the song, but it still sounds "Regina-esque". (You'll know what I men if you ever listen to her hits such as Fidelity, Us, Edit, or any of her song.) In her piano-only cover version, the loneliness pictured in the lyrics is more apparent. And it's so gorgeous.

Superb Soundtracky Saturday: Saturday Morning Cartoons Greatest Hits

Dude, that’s a lame title.

Buzz off! It’s my watch now. You’re history, and I’ll do as I please.

Soundtracky? That’s not even a word.

Oh. You’re a lexicographer now?

Are you a brain surgeon?

“???” No. But I’m the figure of the banner now, and of every ID! This is my reign. A new era for this blog! And thus…

Okay, okay. I’m off. (Please…)

Hey! Wash up? I’m nut finnish yet.

You’re not and you won’t. I better find John. He speaks that language better?

What language? Hey! Where are you…

I’m leaving! Buy, buy!

Well, he’s gone now. That means I could elaborate this latest project, the brilliant and genius “Superb Soundtracky Saturday”, to you…But I’m kinda, not in the mood now. So just read what is written and listen the songs below, after the break. Idieu amigieu!

SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS GREATEST HITS: THE CELEBRATION OF THE SO CALLED “ALTERNATIVE ERA”
Actually, this is a bad start for this SSS, since it’s not a soundtrack album. It’s an album of theme songs, cartoons theme songs. But it’s not too far as being addressed as soundtrack. Okay, enough with that. This is all we have for this week and we gotta make do with it.

Saturday Morning Cartoons Greatest Hits was released in 1995 it contains 19 theme songs from 19 cartoon series of the 60’s and 70’s (mainly); such as Speed Racer, Scooby Doo, Spider-Man, Underdog, Johnny Quest, etc. The interesting part, the one that makes this album special, is the performers of those theme songs are mostly, if not saying all, the 90’s bands or singers who carried out the 90’s sound. Yeah, that alternative sounds. You can have pop, rock, pop/rock, punk rock, (a bit) grunge, you name it.

There are Mary Lou Lord (the busker girl who once made Courtney Love jealous because of her relationship with Kurt), Frente! (I’m sure you know their song “Bizarre Love Triangle”), Ramones (Hey, I did say mostly before), Sublime (who doesn’t know Santeria?), and many others, or 15 to be exact.

The album became an interesting package for the 60’s/70’s cartoons lovers and 90’s music lovers. And from the reviews I see on the net, on average, this album gets a positive one. In the scale of 1 to 5, it gets 3,5. So, if you’re wanna get nostalgic with your favorite cartoons or your favorite bands or singers, you better try this one.
Enjoy the very first of Superb Soundtracky Saturday!

John “Gibberish” Lennon (IV)

Is John Lennon a great poet and writer? Absolutely. Is he a genius? Why even ask. And that title is my compliment for those. I bet you who have read his book, In His Own Write, could understand  that  (or maybe disagree with that). And for you who haven’t, well, you’ll have your opinion after you read what I’m gonna show you.

In His Own Write was published back in 1964. It contains short stories, poems, and drawings by John Lennon, and the keywords for the book is nonsensical, or even idiotic, or my favorite, gibbering. Even at the back of the title page in the book is written “Nonsense literature, English.”

Blimey, I Got an Award

STYLISH BLOGGER AWARD

I got this award from Pearl at Window Shopping, and I would like to thank her for that.

The rules for this award are:
1. Thank and link back to the person who gave you this award.
2. Share 7 things about yourself. (Which is not quite easy for me actually.)
3. Pick other 15 great bloggers you know.
4. Then contact them and tell them about the award.

Okay. Now here's a glimpse about me:
1. I'm a freelance translator and editor.
2. I'm a terrible music junkie who would discern any kind of music as long as it's good (for me).
3. I'm a comic and manga (some of them) lover.
3. My recent favorite readings are Taiko (Japanese novel), Machine of Death, and Anak Bajang Menggiring Angin (Inonesian novel).
4. I used to be in a band, Beyond Any Recognition. (You could still find us in myspace, though it's been abandoned for years.)
5. I'm a coffeehead.
6. The last time I really do sports is like 10 years ago, or maybe more.
7. I'm a Barca fan. (Sport is fun to watch, not to do.)

I still couldn't make my mind yet, to whom I shall pass this award on. So, for those who would like to leave a comment here, maybe you'll be the next to receive this award.

Music Monday: Best Cover Versions - War Pigs

"War Pigs"
Original Artist: Black Sabbath
Cover Version by: The Dresden Dolls

In 1970 Black Sabbath released the album Paranoid, and it became the band's best album with two everlasting hits, Iron Man and War Pigs. With two legendary songs, no wonder Paranoid became one of The Best Gothic Albums Of All Time by Q magazine in 1999 ("[Black Sabbath] stamped their bombastic and doom-laden imprint on British rock forever.") and it's also listed as number 130 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Music Monday: Best Cover Versions - Strawberry Fields Forever

It stroke me right away the first time I heard Strawberry Fields Forever in Anthology 2 album. John Lennon sang alone and the only instrument was his acoustic guitar, and the song "haunted" me. What I heard was just a home demo made by Lennon.

Then a couple of months later, I got Magical Mystery Tour album, I heard the full recording version of this song, and my head just exploded. The sound of the brass and string sections' wild and ambient play, plus the train-like drumming is so...I don't know...INTOXICATING. (Says who the song is not about LSD?)

Music Monday: Best Cover Versions - Brimful of Asha

This is my second Best Cover Versions, and already I break the rule of my project!

How come? Well, what I present is not a cover version of Cornershop's hit, Brimful of Asha, actually this Fatboy Slim's version is more of a remix version, because it still uses the original track.

But, what the heck, this is my project anyway. And who knows, maybe you'll like these videos.

So, enjoy!

A Prelude to Wordless Wednesday

I will make my first Wordless Wednesday, and since I wanna keep it WORDLESS, I will give the short introduction here.

Just like my Music Monday, I'm also gonna make this WW as a project called Awesome Comic Sketches, where I will post some awesome sketches (or uncolored works) of my favorite comic artists.

Why comics? Because comic-art is the closest one to me among any other forms of art.

Finally, I hope you enjoy this little project of mine as much as I do.

Music Monday: Best Cover Versions - Smells Like Teen Spirit

This my first Music Monday post, and I've concluded that rather than posting videos in random, I will make it a kind of project called Best Cover Versions. I will show two videos in each post: one is my favorite song sang by its original artists, and the other one is the best cover version that I found so far.
So, as this is my first MM post ever, I will begin with the band that influenced me the most and its greatest hits ever:
