Music Monday: Best Cover Versions - War Pigs

"War Pigs"
Original Artist: Black Sabbath
Cover Version by: The Dresden Dolls

In 1970 Black Sabbath released the album Paranoid, and it became the band's best album with two everlasting hits, Iron Man and War Pigs. With two legendary songs, no wonder Paranoid became one of The Best Gothic Albums Of All Time by Q magazine in 1999 ("[Black Sabbath] stamped their bombastic and doom-laden imprint on British rock forever.") and it's also listed as number 130 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

While Iron Man became well known for its legendary guitar riffs, War Pigs (at least for me) is considered as one of the greatest rock/metal epic songs. The dynamics of the song couldn't be any better. From a slow and flowing intro, shifts into intense verses, then explodes in the chorus. And the solo part is simply amazing, not too much noodle-doodle but the melody's gonna stick in your head.

Now here's a glimpse about the cover version. The Dresden Dolls is a Boston rock band (they claim their style as Brechtian punk cabaret), and they're kinda unique since it's a two piece band; with Amanda Palmer on vocals and piano (not a common instrument for a punk band) and Brian Viglione on drums and percussion.

The Dresden Doll's cover version War Pigs is so powerful! That's the only way I can describe it. They performed in their hometown, Boston, in 2005, which later made into a DVD entitled Paradise. Watch how crazy Brian Viglione is behind his drum, he just kept pounding and pounding. You would wanna always stare at a spectacle such as that and not to miss a single pound. And watch how Amanda Palmer has to struggle to keep up on her piano, until she finally gave up and they had to start the song all over again.

And that's my Best Cover Version for this Monday. Enjoy! And, Happy MM!
